The demonstrators in Kilome constituency of Makueni county accused Cabinet Secretary Charity Ngilu of using her position to create confusion between residents of the two counties.
The demonstrators, who later assembled at Malili trading centre, just a few metres from the proposed techno city, were supported by two top officials of the giant Konza Farmers Cooperative Society — chairman David Mutangili and vice-chairman David Yaitha.
But in a quick rejoinder, Mrs Ngilu stood her ground and accused Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana of misleading residents.
“Prof Kibwana was the minister for Lands when this boundary issue came up, and this was long before even the idea of Konza Techno City came into being.
Why is he trying to play Mr Clean now?” asked the minister.
On Monday, Prof Kibwana bought space in all the major newspapers to dismiss the minister.
Kilome MP Regina Ndambuki who said she had the support of all the five MPs from the region, questioned Mrs Ngilu’s timing in stating that the city was not in Makueni.
“The Kilome MP under which Konza Techno City lies is administratively and politically in Makueni county; all the provincial administrators and the police are receiving directives from Makueni County headquarters.
Where then did Mrs Ngilu come up with this confusing story from?” Mrs Ndambuki asked.
“Our conclusion is that Mrs Ngilu has accepted to be misused by people out to sabotage the Konza plans and unfortunately she has accepted to play ball,” she said.
The Kilome MP said cabinet secretary for information and Communication Dr Matiangi assured her that all was well with the Konza Techno City plans despite recent negative publicity.
‘’Our only conclusion is that Mrs Ngilu has accepted to be misused by people who are out to sabotage the Konza Techno City plans and unfortunately she has accepted to play ball with the detractors’’, she said.
Mr Mutangili said as the chairman of the Konza society in which the Techno City derives its name all geographical maps in his possession has always placed Konza Techno City in Makueni county and expressed surprise where the new scheme to locate it in Machakos came from.
