Fifa President Sepp Blatter has admitted for the first time that it was "a mistake" to award the 2022 World Cup to Qatar. In the clearest indication yet that football's world governing body could change their mind over the Middle Eastern state hosting the global football showpiece. Temperatures in Qatar can reach in excess of 50 degrees celsius in the summer, and when asked if handing the 2022 World Cup to Qatar was a mistake, Blatter confessed for the first time that an error had been made. "Yes, of course," he told Swiss station RTS "You know, everyone makes mistakes in life." It will raise fresh doubts over the hosting of the 2022 tournament, with failed bidders Australia, the USA, South Korea and Japan potentially ready to act.
Daily Mirror travel editor Nigel Thompson said: "I've been to Qatar in the winter and the weather is perfect for playing and watching football - like a nice summer's day in the UK. "The stadiums I visited looked well up to hosting international matches and that was before they are refurbished.
"Given's Qatar's almost immeasurable wealth, I would not doubt the infrastructure will be in place. "But as anyone who has been to the region in the summer will tell you, it's insane to contemplate playing or watching football. It's so hot you think your fillings will melt."
