Another week, another warning about sugary drinks.

Another “carry on as usual” response. Teenagers are eating and drinking their way to an early death.

Their diets are appalling. They’re addicted to sugar. They think TV ads speak more truth then their parents. So they don’t listen.

And they’re gleefully aided and abetted by the food industry.

I only have healthy food at home, with occasional treats.
Fizzy drinks have never found a comfy corner in my fridge and now I’ve banned fruit juice too.

If my boys want a drink, there’s water on tap.

“But sports drinks are better than water,” my 15-year-old says with dodgy authority.

“They hydrate you better”.

“Er, hydrate comes from hydro, which comes from H2O, which means hydrogen and oxygen, which is water” I reply, in – in my opinion – a dazzlingly clever fashion.

Or maybe not, as when he’s out of the house he necks back absolute c**p drinks with 10 teaspoons of sugar per 250ml bottle.
