A Kenyan court on Thursday (May 29th) charged Tanzanian national Ramadhan Mubarak with being a member of al-Shabaab and for being in the country illegally, officials told Sabahi.
Mubarak was charged before a Mandera court where he pleaded guilty to all the charges, Mandera County Police Commander Noah Mwivanda told Sabahi. The court remanded Mubarak to Mandera GK Prison until his sentencing trial June 2nd.
Mwivanda said Mubarak was arrested May 22nd in Mandera town as he "sneaked in from Somalia".
"Mubarak told investigators that he fled Somalia after falling out with al-Shabaab," Mwivanda said. "He said that the group did not deliver on their promises including money. Mubarak said he has changed."
Mwivanda said Mubarak has been helping police by providing information on al-Shabaab's activities and that investigations were ongoing.
Meanwhile on Monday, another two suspected terrorists were arrested in in Lafey town en route to Mandera, Kenya's The Star reported. Police said they believe Yunis Mohammed Osman, a Somali, and Mahabub Aden Adow, a Kenyan, are behind criminal activities in the region.
Mwivanda said the men, who "appeared suspicious", were on a bus from Nairobi.
"One of our police officers was in the said bus and, according to him, any time the bus neared a police roadblock Adow would hide Osman under a seat," he said.
