University student strike due to increase in fees

A majority of university students countrywide have made good their threat of protesting against what they say is a proposal to increase university fees. In Nairobi, some students have been arrested as they marched in the streets engaging police officers in running battles. Some sections of the busy University Way and Uhuru highway have been blocked. Students have now been contained within the university compound with heavy police presence around. There are also reports of looting by some university students around Nairobi. The protest disrupted business in some areas within the CBD. And in Mombasa, students from the Technical University also marched in the streets of Mombasa calling for Education cabinet secretary Jacob Kaimenyi to reverse his directive on the fee issue
