Kenya have made an about turn and will now take part in the Grand Prix women's volleyball event in Mexico in July. Kenya Volleyball Federation chairman Waithaka Kioni yesterday moved to assure that Kenya will honour the invite which will see 28 countries with Kenya, Algeria, Kazakhstan, Croatia, Czech Republic, Mexico, Bulgaria and Australia battling it out in Division Three.
Earlier there had been indications the Kenyans would give the event a wide berth. Yesterday, however, Kioni said: "It will be a let down if we do not honour the invite, our players will get the much needed exposure and experience since they will play against the best teams in the World. As a federation we do not want to deny our players such a golden chance," said Kion who doubles up as an African Volleyball Confederation vice president.
Kioni who was reinstated as the KVF chairman at last month's national election added the Federation will hold a national executive committee meeting this Saturday to, among other things, discuss the issue.
Kioni said, "We (KVF) will hold our first meeting this Saturday. We will also discuss, among other issues, the release of Prisons women's team players who are part of the national team but are currently attending a development course at the Prisons Staff Training College (KPTC) in Ruiru for national team training."
The desired players include Praxides Agala, Diana Khisa, Evelyne Makuto, Lydia Maiyo, Mercy Moim Elizabeth Wanyama and Jane Wacu to resume training early next month,"
"Maiyo, Wacu, Makuto, Agala, Khisa, Wanyama and Moim are utility players in the national outfit and therefore we need their services ahead of the trip to Mexico," noted Kioni.
The David Lunga'ho coached Prisons team landed an invite to Mexico after Kenya bagged the gold medal ahead of Cameroon and Tunisia during the Africa Cup of Nations championships last year in Nairobi
