Kitui Governor Julius Malombe has said elected leaders irrespective of party affiliation should be at liberty to meet the President and lobby for funding of development projects. Dr Malombe said Kenyans must learn to recognise and respect office holders irrespective of political inclinations. He revealed that Governors from the lower Eastern Province are planning to pay President Uhuru Kenyatta a visit at State House soon to negotiate on the mega development agenda in their respective counties. “There is no hindrance or discouragement from any quarters when leaders from this county want audience with the national Government (President) to get financial support towards mega development projects in their areas of jurisdiction,” the Wiper Democratic Movement party Governor said. Malombe reminded grassroots leaders that the President is in-charge of 85 per cent of the national budget. He made the remarks when he addressed MCAs, County Executive Committee officials, chief officers and top county government officers from his county during a bonding retreat at a Mombasa hotel over the weekend.
The governor said that there should be no impediment to State House’s visit by leaders from the county regardless of their political affiliation. He told the meeting comprising mostly supporters of former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka’s Wiper party to focus on wider county development agenda and front a unified proposal that would assist them execute their duties expeditiously. Malombe noted that his government will not tolerate incompetent lazy and corrupt officers entrusted with governance responsibilities. “We must all be responsive to the needs and aspirations of Kitui people no matter what it takes. There are neither ‘but’ nor ‘ifs’ when it comes to service delivery to the taxpayers. We must be committed and devoted in our duties,” he said. He urged his officers, including the MCAs, to work hard to satisfy the people, and not necessarily for them to be re-elected. “We need to give quality services that will change people’s livelihoods and salvage them from perennial poverty and underdevelopment,” he said.
