The Kenyan government announced a 24-hour curfew in Wajir following days of inter-clan clashes that left a teenager seriously wounded on Monday (June 2nd), Kenya's Daily Nation reported.
The curfew is intended to prevent further attacks, said Wajir County Commissioner Naftali Mung'athia, who announced the dawn-to-dusk restriction on movement.
Police rescued the youth after a mob armed with panga machetes and clubs attacked the boy. One suspect was arrested in connection with the assault and will soon be charged, Mung'athia said.
Eleven people were killed in clashes last Thursday. Since then, 14 schools have been closed, 250 people displaced and numerous houses burned.
The Kenyan military has been deployed to the area to assist police, Kenya Defence Forces spokesman Willy Wesonga said.
"The soldiers will only be tasked with assisting the police in handling the security situation and will be guided by the needs of the police," he said.
Lawmakers from the area, the Parliamentary Caucus on Human Rights and the Supreme Council of Kenyan Muslims have all called on the Kenyan government to halt the violence.
