Kenya has received a $495 million (Sh43 billion) grant from the Global Fund to fight Aids, tuberculosis and malaria for the next three years, Health principal secretary Fred Segor has said.
Speaking during a media briefing held at hotel Sarova Panafric, Nairobi, on Monday, Prof Segor said the funding would be managed by the ministries of Finance and Health. Amref will be the principal recipient for the TB and malaria component while Kenya Red Cross Society and Care will get the HIV component.
He noted that programmes under the Global Fund had made significant contribution in the reduction of deaths through the provision of life-saving anti-retroviral therapy for HIV, TB treatment, and insecticide-treated nets to prevent the transmission of malaria.
“Over 610,000 people living with HIV had been enrolled on the life-saving drugs by the end of 2012 by the government through the National Aids and STI Control Programme, a third of whom are supported by the Global Fund...
“Every year, over six million people access counselling and testing services with the Global Fund supporting one million of these tests,” he said.
