The three were resting outside a shop along Guled road.
The clerics whose names could not be immediately established sustained serious gun shot wounds in the head and were rushed to the Garissa district hospital.
One of them is however said to be the younger brother of Abdi Rashid - the cleric who was killed in Garissa last week.
Garissa county commissioner Rashid Khator said that no arrest had been made in connection with the incident. Police managed to recover two pistols at the scene.
“Forensic experts will go through the guns to get the finger prints. This will assist us in identifying the culprits,” said Khator.
According to eye witnesses, the three men ambushed the clerics from the back and proceeded to shoot at them from close range.
“The crowd that was near the place charged towards them immediately after the incident and as a result they panicked and fled on foot living behind the weapons,” said an eye witness.
Khator refused to link the incident to last Weeks’s incident where another Muslim cleric was killed by unknown assailants along Ngamia road as he was heading home from the mosque a few minutes to 8pm.
