The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) launched a campaign on Monday (November 3rd) to recruit 2,500 soldiers, warning that corruption in the recruitment process will not be tolerated, Kenya's Daily Nation reported.
The KDF will deal harshly with those engaging in corruption, said KDF Deputy Chief Lieutenant General Samson Mwathethe, who announced the details of the new recruitment. The month-long recruitment drive will be conducted at 288 centres around the country.
"The recruiting team will adhere to the policy of zero tolerance to corruption and are under instructions to exhibit transparency, fairness and accountability," he said.
The KDF previously dismissed and imprisoned 48 soldiers found taking bribes from potential recruits, Mwathethe said, and 96 civilians were arrested on the same charge.
Since 2009, at least 45 million shillings ($502,000) have been paid in bribes during KDF recruitment, Mwathethe said.
Although bribes have gone down in recruitment exercises in the past for years, "Kenyans are still being conned and that is why we urge for vigilance and caution among interested recruits," he said according to The Standard.
There should be no cost to participating in the recruitment, he told potential recruits, instructing them to call 0726419709 to report any incidents of bribery.
