Scene: Caroline Finegan was punched by Ryan Ingham at Shudehill bus station, the court heard
A man murdered his fiancé by punching her with ‘as much force as he could’ during a trivial row over whether to get a bus or taxi home from a night out, a jury heard.
Ryan Ingham, 27, ran at mum-of-five Caroline Finegan, 29, 'at full speed' outside a bus station and delivered a 'devastating blow', the Manchester Evening News reports.
The force of the punch broke her nose, fractured her eye socket and caused her neck to swivel so violently that blood vessels burst, the jury heard.
A witness saw Ingham deliver the blow and Ms Finegan collapse 'lifeless' to the floor in the early hours of January 16, Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court was told. She died later in hospital.
Francis McEntee, prosecuting, told the jury that Ingham’s momentum ‘carried him past’ her.
He said: “He punched through her, not at her. She was felled by a single fatal blow.
"The defendant got into an argument with Miss Finegan, possibly about something as trivial as whether to get a taxi or a bus home. We say he ran up to her and struck her with a devastating blow.”
Ingham, from Blackley, later told police that Ms Finegan, from Stockport, had fallen while drunk, the jury heard.
He has pleaded not guilty to murder but admits responsibility for her death.
But Mr McEntee said: “We say that the defendant is guilty of murder on the basis that when he hit Ms Finegan he did so with an intent to cause grievous bodily harm. The defendant ran up to Ms Finegan and we say struck her with as much force as he could.”
The couple began a relationship in September last year and got engaged in November.
The court heard they had been drinking at Churchills pub and were captured on CCTV leaving for the Shudehill bus station. Ingham then went into a takeaway.
Mr McEntee said: “There is a great deal or to-ing and fro-ing. You might assume that there is an argument beginning.”
Ms Finegan, who had four daughters and a son, talked to a taxi driver, the court heard, then walked away.
Mr McEntee said Ingham talked to the same driver then ran at Ms Finegan in a ‘determined manner’ as a witness watched.
He said: “We say he punched her with full force. The witness thought the punch had been delivered with every ounce of strength that he had.”
Ingham was seen trying to shake Ms Finegan and prop her up against a wall. He dialled 999 and was heard in the background saying ‘get up’, the jury heard.
Mr McEntee said Ingham claimed in police interviews after his arrest that Ms Finegan was drunk and he may have ‘knocked into her’ when he ran past her to flag down a black cab.
But he added: “She did not fall over. The Prosecution case is clear - that he ran and aimed a very forceful punch indeed.”
